HELIX
2009 sees the release of Helix’s 14th studio CD entitled “Vagabond Bones” featuring the re-united original 80’s line-up of Greg “Fritz” Hinz, Brent “The Doctor” Doerner, Daryl Gray, and Brian Vollmer, along with newcomer shredder Kaleb Duck. The CD contains nine previously unreleased studio tracks, one of which features a duet between Brian and Russ Graham of The Killer Dwarfs on the song “Hung Over But Still Hanging In.” Most of the songs were co-writes between Brian and Sean Kelly, who now plays guitar for Nelly Furtado. On four of the tracks, Moe Berg of Pursuit of Happiness was also a co-writer. As well, in September Brian had his first movie role, albeit a small bit part in the new Trailer Park Boy’s movie Countdown to Liquor Day. The movie’s premiere took place in Halifax on the first day of the Atlantic Film Festival. For the event Brian and his wife Lynda, and Brent and Kaleb all flew out for the show, and afterwards got up and performed with the award winning Arkells at the Halifax Metro Center for 1,500 fans. Exciting things like that have been happening throughout Helix’s 35 year career. And what a career it’s been! The band, formed in 1974 in Kitchener, Ontario, has sold over 2,000,000 albums, had four gold and 2 platinum albums, has had a Number One record in the country of Sweden, has toured 19 countries, 3 continents, and played with over 150 of the greatest rock and roll recording acts in the world. A list of acts the band has played with over the years sounds like a who’s-who of rock & roll: Motorhead, KISS, Motley Crue, Accept, Girlschool, Heart, Whitesnake, The Scorpions,Megadeath,Mercyful Fate,Quiot Riot,Meatloaf, Ronnie James Dio, and over 100 more! As well, the band has released many videos over the years, mostly while they were either signed to, or licensed to E.M.I./Capitol. The have also had many songs on TV shows and movies: Today Helix continues to play in excess of fifty shows a year. Earlier this summer they played Rocklahoma outside of Tulsa, Oklahoma with Great White, Twisted Sister, and many more famous 80’s acts. The band is already booked for several 2010 festivals. The name itself suggests something a little more than the typical hard rock band; something intelligent and complex, even sophisticated -- and they were. Anvil Chorus made a thinking man's metal. There was such a thing and it wasn't thought of as a style, just good music that put some structure and challenge into a normally repetitive form. Clearly influenced by the prevailing titans of progressive rock and heavy metal of the day, Anvil Chorus was a fount of unique inspirations. A group of talented individuals, half of them multi-instrumentalists and all of them bringing to the table a creative flair. The composition, arrangement and melodic skills enjoyed a harmonic and contrapuntal implementation that was delivered crushingly… hugely. The sound was Big with a capital “B”. The guitar harmonies, keyboard wizardry and bottled-lightning rhythm section were a powerful collision. Heavy riffs, catchy melodies, belting vocals and a refined aesthetic completed the signature sound; Anvil Chorus, in the early 1980’s, rightly earned a buzz of their own for their unique and exquisite style, which to this day continues to be regarded as significant and influential. Nearly 3 decades after the group's formation and a couple years after their recent reformation, this legendary underground San Francisco progressive heavy metal band unleashes their first full length debut album for the Rockadrome label. Consisting solely of newly recorded material from their early 80s heyday, it's destined to be the classic album everyone has long awaited from this magical group. Led by guitarist Thaen Rasmussen and vocalist/bassist Aaron Zimpel (who have also had roles in various bands such as Heathen, Metal Church, Vicious Rumors, Release and Control), the integrity of their original sound is fully maintained and should please anyone who has followed the band through the years or owned any of their heavily circulated demo tapes. A 12-page color booklet with liner notes written by San Francisco metal legend Ron Quintana (KUSF/Metal Mania), cover art by Mark Devito (Motorhead) and packed with lyrics and photos, completes this magnificent and much anticipated release. Coming soon!
Ron Keel Ron Keel started his music career with a Tennessee-based band known as Lust. He came to prominence with his band Steeler, which featured Yngwie Malmsteen, Rik Fox and Mark Edwards. Steeler became one of L.A.'s hottest acts, but could not withstand the test of time. Malmsteen was the first to leave, opting to play with the band Alcatrazz (featuring Graham Bonnet) before achieving success with his own band. However, Steeler was able to record one self-titled album, released in 1984 on Shrapnel Records. At one point, Steeler had the highest selling independent record of all-time. After the demise of Steeler , Ron formed a new band and simply called it Keel. The band quickly secured a major record deal with Gold Mountain / A&M Records. Keel toured the world and sold 3 to 4 million records throughout its duration. KISS vocalist/bassist Gene Simmons produced two of Keel's albums: The Right to Rock and The Final Frontier. The band regrouped in 2008 and are touring to celebrate their 25th anniversary. Outside of Keel, Ron also plays country music, sometimes performing under the name "Ronnie Lee Keel." In 2000, Ron formed IronHorse, which mixed country with hard rock. He left the band in 2007 to focus on other aspects of his career. He also performed as part of a Brooks & Dunn tribute band in the Country Superstars Tribute at the Fitz Casino & Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada.

"Yet another" Power Metal band from Germany? In the last years Heavy Metal has strongly shifted towards Death Metal and Metalcore, while Power Metal almost became a dying breed. Thus it is great to see a young emerging band proving that well-made Power Metal is still an important part of the metal landscape. SOLAR FRAGMENT and their debut release A Spark of Deity will convince fans of traditional and modern metal alike...

ADAKAIN The band was formed in 2006, but began gaining actual recognition in early 2007. In September 2007, AdaKaiN released their first E.P., Tears of Dysphoria. The symbolic reference to the title of the E.P. refers to their outlook on not only what has happened to the music industry today, but also the chaotic surrealism that plagues the minds of society. The E.P. was recorded with award winning and well-established producer Eric Delegard. > More
