The StepMax Tremolo
The StepMax Tremolo is a modernized direct replacement for the *Stratocaster bend bar system although it can be used on other solid body guitars. This Tremolo system has been engineered in such a way that greater upward and downward bending range has been improved upon compared to the Stratocaster stock Tremolo. The Tremolo is mounted flush to the body which provides greater sustain and tuning stability. There are two holes in which the trem-arm can be located, providing a different feel determined by the guitarists personal preference.
The StepMax is a non-floating system which allows not only downward bending but also upward bending. This dual-action design uses a cam driven mechanism to pull the saddles straight back when bending the tremolo upward. There is a step adjustment screw located on the back of the unit that lets you preset the amount the tremolo can be pulled in the upward position. The step adjustment screw can also be screwed all the way in so that the tremolo is locked from bending upward.
Guitar Player Magazine Says:
The StepMax tremolo is easy to install, has excellent performance and requires no permanent modifications. The tremolo also maintains great stability for drop tunings and stays in reasonable tune when a string breaks.
Features & Benefits
The StepMax Tremolo is a dual action non-floating direct replacement Tremolo, there is no drilling or routing necessary. Unlike other designs, the StepMax Tremolo pulls the strings straight back, not down to the fret board as other Tremolo systems do. This system converts a single acting tremolo to double acting while maintaining great stability even if string breakage occurs. Unison and double strings bends are now possible without compromising the guitars ability to stay in tune. There is an adjustment screw on the back side of the tremolo allowing for preset step adjustments. This adjustment allows the StepMax to be pulled in an upward direction raising the pitch of the strings to a full step and beyond. (The StepMax pulls the strings straight back.) The StepMax makes drop D and E flat tunings much easier than a floating system as it stays in tune to a much greater degree. The unit decks to the body of the guitar creating greater sustain and has two positions for the Tremolo arm. Currently the unit fits the six screw import, vintage style spacing, and *Stratocaster guitar two post knife edge system. (Piezo saddle accommodations are available) The StepMax installs in one hour or less and is available in natural satin and black. It is very easy to convert back to the original tremolo system as there is no drilling or routing necessary to install the StepMax. (Read Tremolo Reviews)
Technical Information
The StepMax Tremolo is made from some of the best suited materials for the job, bearing in mind weight is a big factor (10-1/2 ounces including Bend Bar). Our double Acting Tremolos are all machined from the solid, there are no base metal castings.
We use Aircraft Aluminum 6061, and 7075, both anodized to Rockwell 60R, hardened tool steel, and heat treated ¼ inch diameter 304 Stainless Steel for the bend bar. They are made in the USA with pride and quality on the most modern CNC equipment.
Originally the StepMax Tremolo system was designed for the direct replacement of a six screw single acting bridge to a double acting bridge system. The trick was to have the ability to be retro fitted with no damage to the guitar. (Tremolo Installation Video) We now have the two post fulcrum system to fit most Fender and other solid body guitar models.
Note: The StepMax Tremolo is only suitable for solid body type guitars, with a pre-routed tremolo spring cavity.
